Must Haves for Your First Nashville Apartment

Now that you have your first Nashville apartment, you are ready to go shopping. But wait! Before you spend one penny and start your descent into debt, create a list of the absolute “must-haves†for your Nashville apartment. Then develop a list of “would-like-to-haves†for the future.
Do not respond to the almost overwhelming need to fill all of the space in your Nashville apartment. Address your immediate needs first. Take your time getting the other nonessential items.
List each room in your Nashville apartment and identify your must-haves. Begin with your bathroom since this is the first room you are likely to need. Be sure you have all basic personal hygiene items such as toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrush, soap, and shampoo. The only other two items you must have are a bathroom trash can and a shower curtain. If the Nashville apartment came with a shower curtain, decide if you want to take the time to clean it or just get a new one. You may or may not need shower rings for your shower curtain.
The next room you will use is probably the kitchen. In addition to basic groceries, you will need pots and pans, dishware and utensils. You can get these items in boxed sets. Initially, you might even want to use disposable plates, cups and utensils. In addition to cost savings, this will save you dish washing time. You will need a trash can for your kitchen.
Now consider your bedroom. Of course you will need a bed and mattress. Make sure you know the size of your bedroom so you purchase the appropriate size bed and mattress. You will also need bedding such as sheets, pillows, and comforter. Consider how you want to organize your clothes. You can get a dresser or an organizer for your closet. Stackable plastic drawers are a nice alternative to dressers. The best choice for you may be based on style, functionality or price. You might want to get another trash can for your bedroom. Many people only use trash cans in the bathroom and kitchen.
Your windows may or may not include blinds. If they do not, purchase blinds at minimum. You might want to purchase curtains as well. Blinds are necessary for privacy and to keep rooms dark at night for sleeping purposes. Curtains provide an extra level of protection against light and outdoor weather. Curtains also help minimize outside noise.
You may or may not need additional lighting. If you do, think about purchasing tabletop or floor lamps. You can use a lamp in your bedroom, living room and dining room. You can purchase a sofa for your living room as well. Consider a convertible sofa that can also be used as a bed. Futons are great alternatives as well. This type of couch might come in handy if you have an unexpected overnight guest.
You do not need to get a formal dining room set right away. You can get a small kitchen set or a two-chair high table outfit. If you really do not want to spend money, buy a card table with two or four folding chairs. You can upgrade to a large dining room table in the future.
If you work at home, you might need a desk and chair. You can use a small folding banquet table for your desk. Use one of the folding chairs that came with the card table. There is no need to buy a fancy desk or chair.
You do not need to spend a lot of money when you rent your first Nashville apartment. Stick with the basics until you have money to spare. Even then, do not go on a spending binge for Nashville apartment furniture!
